Infertility

Difficulty conceiving is more common than many people realize. Infertility affects approximately one in eight couples, and evaluation can help identify whether there is an underlying cause and what options may be available.

According to ACOG, an infertility evaluation is generally recommended after one year of regular intercourse without contraception if pregnancy has not occurred. For women over 35, evaluation is recommended after six months. For women over 40, it is appropriate to seek evaluation right away.

Earlier evaluation may also be appropriate if there is a known history of irregular cycles, pelvic infections, endometriosis, ovulation problems, or other conditions that could affect fertility. An evaluation does not necessarily mean advanced treatment — it starts with understanding your cycles, health history, and whether there may be a specific issue to address.

An infertility workup typically includes a review of menstrual and reproductive history, hormonal blood tests, and assessment of ovulation. Depending on findings, additional evaluation — including imaging or semen analysis — may be recommended. Treatment options vary widely and are guided by the underlying cause and your personal goals.
