Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. It affects an estimated 10–15% of women of reproductive age and is one of the most common causes of chronic pelvic pain.
Symptoms of endometriosis can vary widely. Some women experience severe pelvic pain, especially during menstruation, while others have mild or no symptoms at all. Common signs include painful periods, pain during intercourse, pain with bowel movements or urination, heavy or irregular bleeding, and difficulty conceiving.
Diagnosis typically involves a detailed review of your symptoms and history, a pelvic exam, and imaging. In some cases, laparoscopy — a minimally invasive surgical procedure — may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis and assess the extent of the condition.
Treatment options depend on the severity of symptoms, your age, and whether pregnancy is a goal. Options may include over-the-counter or prescription pain management, hormonal therapy to slow the growth of endometrial tissue, or laparoscopic surgery to remove affected areas. Management is often ongoing, and the approach may change over time as your needs evolve.
