Abnormal Bleeding
Abnormal uterine bleeding is one of the most common reasons women seek gynecologic care. It includes any bleeding that is unusual in timing, frequency, amount, or duration.
Normal menstrual cycles vary, but bleeding is generally considered abnormal when periods become significantly heavier, longer, more frequent, or unpredictable — or when bleeding occurs between periods, after sex, or after menopause. Spotting between cycles or soaking through pads or tampons very quickly also warrants evaluation.
Causes of abnormal bleeding are wide-ranging. Common causes include problems with ovulation, uterine fibroids, polyps, adenomyosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), bleeding disorders, hormonal changes related to perimenopause, certain medications, and in some cases, infection or other gynecologic conditions.
Evaluation typically begins with a review of your bleeding pattern, menstrual history, and overall health. Depending on findings, blood work, ultrasound, or additional testing may be recommended. Treatment varies based on the cause and may include medication, hormonal therapy, or procedural options.
